If you wish to learn more about this unique natural area, this article is for you. We will tell you everything you want to know about the Saboredo Cirque. It is important to note that this place is meant to be enjoyed calmly, with your eyes wide open. Most likely, you will fall hopelessly in love with the Aran Valley.

What is the Saboredo Cirque and How Was It Formed?

The Saboredo Cirque is the result of glacial movement thousands of years ago, during the last glaciations that occurred in the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park. The Saboredo Valley has a characteristic U-shape, typical of glacial erosion, with enormous blocks of ice carving their way and creating unique forms.

Surrounding the valley are several mountains over 2,000 meters in altitude, with peaks such as Tuc de Saboredo and Pic d’Amitges, both over 2,800 meters, which create a sensation of standing beside stone giants. This landscape, along with others in the park, forms a very special and unparalleled natural space: lakes, mountains, meadows, and forests in the high mountains, accompanied by rich and diverse fauna. Undoubtedly, these are excellent reasons to visit during your vacation in the Aran Valley.

The Lakes of Saboredo

Some of the most impressive elements of the Saboredo Cirque are its lakes, formed in depressions where glaciers once lay. Their smooth, reflective surfaces create a natural spectacle that fully justifies a visit to this place. The most notable include Lac deth Miei, Lac Major de Saboredo, Lac de Baish, and Lac de Naut de Saboredo, among others that fill this mountain area with water. Each possesses its own special characteristics, which is why we suggest you visit more than one.

Hiking Routes in the Saboredo Cirque

One of the best ways to explore the Saboredo Cirque is to traverse its extensive network of trails, which are well-marked and prepared to safely welcome all types of visitors. One of the main and most versatile routes departs from the Ruda Valley and passes by the Saboredo refuge. It takes approximately 2 hours from the parking area to the refuge, with an elevation gain of 500 meters (from 1,800 to 2,300 meters in altitude). This is a low-difficulty route, but it remains a mountain itinerary that demands respect and a certain level of preparation.

As you gain altitude, the landscapes transform, and you begin to notice more and more elements characteristic of high altitudes: this signifies your entry into the Saboredo Cirque. From the refuge, it is possible to continue along various routes, which are more demanding than the previous section, such as the one ascending towards Port de Ratera, offering views of Lac deth Miei and Lac de Naut de Saboredo. This route can be completed in approximately 1.5 hours.

If you feel adventurous, you can continue climbing towards Estany Gelat de Saboredo, located in an even higher area, although the terrain conditions present an added challenge, reserved for experienced high-mountain hikers (especially outside the summer months). As you can see, there are several options: from easy routes that are no more than a stroll to high-mountain itineraries for experienced and well-prepared individuals, both physically and technically. Remember that the high mountains are a very special place, with conditions that often change and hidden risks.

How to Reach the Saboredo Refuge

This refuge is located at nearly 2,300 meters in altitude, within the glacial cirque, making it a strategic point for hikers exploring this region of the Pyrenees. A significant walk is required to reach it, typically starting in the Ruda Valley, progressively ascending towards Saboredo, entering the cirque before arriving at the refuge. Other routes are available, and you can request information directly from the Saboredo refuge website and the Conselh Generau d’Aran.
