Route to Lake Baciver from Pla de Beret

Pla de Beret, besides being a fantastic place, formed by an alpine meadow and close to Baqueira-Beret, is also the main starting point for the route that leads us to Lake Baciver. The route is well-marked and prepared to safely receive visitors. It is a beautiful route that largely follows the Malo River among black pines, which makes the walk even more pleasant.

At Pla de Beret, you’ll find a parking area, known as Orri, from which a track leads to the start of the route. Gradually, we gain altitude, climbing through vegetation and meadows, with wild animals in sight. Hearing the sound of the water is an extra motivation to keep walking and enjoying, and suddenly we start climbing more as we approach the glacial cirque of Baciver: a cinematic place, a vast natural space surrounded by mountains. Shortly after, we will reach Lake Baciver, at an altitude of 2,117 meters, where we can rest and enjoy the reward.

Route details: distance and elevation gain

If we get a little more technical, you’ll better understand the (simple) challenge ahead. The route to Lake Baciver from the Pla de Beret is about 5 kilometers long, round trip, so it’s not a daunting distance. Moreover, reaching the top is definitely worth it. This route has an accumulated elevation gain of 280 meters, making it a gentle and gradual ascent. To give you an idea, the minimum altitude is 1,850 meters and the maximum is 2,117 meters.

Typically, visitors take less than 2 hours to reach Lake Baciver, and this time includes breaks, photo stops, etc. Of course, the total time will depend on your physical condition and the pace you wish to maintain. Even if you have no mountain hiking experience, you can do it, as long as you respect your limits and are aware that it is high mountain terrain: it is best to do this route in the late spring, summer, or early autumn months, as in other months there is a high probability of snow, which will make the ascent quite difficult.

Tips for the visit

This is a relatively easy route, but it still requires some precautions. Here are some tips to ensure everything goes well:

  • Wear hiking footwear with good grip to make your walk easier and safer.
  • Bring some food and water, because you won’t find any services at Pla de Beret. On a hike of this distance, you need to stay hydrated.
  • Your clothing should consist of layers that you can put on and take off: the sun can warm your body, but the wind will cool it. The weather in the high mountains can change quickly.
  • Don’t forget to bring sunscreen, a cap or hat, and sunglasses.
  • You should carry a trash bag with you to collect any waste you may generate; we must protect the environment.
  • Check the weather forecast before starting your journey.

How to get to Lake Baciver and Pla de Beret?

It is important to know how to get to Pla de Beret, as the main route to Lake Baciver starts at this point. It’s best to use Vielha, the capital of the Aran Valley, as a reference point. From there, take the road towards the ski resort of Baqueira-Beret, which is perfectly signposted, and after a few minutes, you will find Pla de Beret: a spacious area with parking and very close to the starting point of the trail you are looking for.

Beware: the parking lot can fill up before noon when weather conditions are good, so it’s best to arrive first thing in the morning. This way you can take advantage of more daylight hours and have more tranquility. On the other hand, in winter, this area is usually covered in snow, which can also impose traffic limitations. We recommend checking the weather forecast and local authority advisories before embarking on your trip.
