How to get to Lake Besiberri

First, you must find the Conangles Refuge, which is located before the southern exit of the Vielha tunnel. (N-230 road). This is important because in the refuge area there is free parking where you can leave your car. From that point, the walk begins. Follow the forest track through the beech trees and soon after you will find the signs indicating Lake Besiberri and the ravine with the same name. Keep going up and you will find them.

Hiking route: level and duration

In this incredible place, one of the best things you can do is a hiking route: it is the best way to truly connect with nature. You will find a well-marked route of medium difficulty; that means you need to be in good physical shape to complete it. The longest route is 9.5 kilometers, starting and ending at the same point, but there are shorter routes, down to a minimum of 6.5 kilometers. The average time for this route is 3 and a half hours, although we recommend doing it more calmly, so you can feel the Pyrenees at a smooth and pleasant pace.

What to see in the natural environment

In the surroundings of Lake Besiberri you can find many incredible things: green forests, composed of beech, pine, and fir trees, that make you feel like you are in a fairy tale; waterfalls that bring the music of water to visitors and viewpoints that allow you to enjoy views of these natural spectacles; the unique animals that live in this precious habitat, such as marmots and chamois; and Lake Besiberri, of course, with its crystalline waters that are a mirror of the mountains that surround it.

If you want to enjoy all this with time and immerse yourself in the environment, you can spend the night in the Besiberri refuge, which has a bed, blankets, and solar energy so you can rest with some comfort before continuing your ascent or going back down. A short distance from the lake (5 minutes by car from the access point) begins the ascent to the incredible Tuc de Molières: we recommend it if you like climbing mountains.

Tips for the visit

It is important that you follow these tips to make your trip more enjoyable and, above all, safe:

  • Wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the mountain: waterproof, with good traction to adapt to the irregular and slippery terrain, enough layers to face the cold of the mountain, and a raincoat to avoid getting too wet.
  • Bring water and food enough to last longer than you think you will be on the mountain. Unexpected events can happen, and you have to be prepared.
  • Don’t forget sunscreen, glasses, and a hat. Even if you are in the mountains and it is cold, the sun can be very strong.
  • Use a walking stick to help you with the ascents and descents. These elements provide support and protect your joints.
  • Tell some people that you are going up the mountain and give them specific information about times and place of access.
  • Don’t leave trash. Bring a bag to collect your waste and avoid leaving your mark on nature.

The most important thing is to respect the mountain, both for your safety and for the maintenance of the environmental conditions, so the first thing is to have common sense.

Best time of year to go

The months with more pleasant weather suitable for climbing to Lake Besiberri are the summer months. Normally, from June to October the conditions are ideal to explore nature with more comfort and safety. If you prefer to come in autumn, you will be greeted by a spectacle of colors, with golden leaves throughout the forest. In winter and the first months of spring, the conditions are harsh: the snow and cold of the high mountains are not for everyone, and only the most prepared and accustomed to these conditions are able to climb, and not without difficulty.
