Where is Artíes and how to get there?
Artíes is a charming village located in Val D’Aran, in the province of Lleida, Catalonia, nestled in the heart of the Pyrenees. At an altitude of approximately 1,143 metres above sea level, Artíes stands out for its rich history and architecture, as well as for its stunning natural environment, surrounded by mountains and rivers.
The most common way to get to Artíes is by car. From Lleida, take the N-230 road to Vielha. Once in Vielha, continue along the C-28 road towards Baqueira. Artíes is about 7 kilometres from Vielha, at a turn-off that will take you straight to the village. Access is simple and direct, making it an accessible destination for visitors.
On the outskirts of the village are the Arties Baths, currently abandoned, and the town hall has built two thermal pools, one measuring 5 x 6 meters and the other 2 x 8, where bathers can enjoy natural thermal water at a temperature of 39°C. They are open to the public from April 1 to mid-October.
Arties will delight sports enthusiasts because it is one of the entrances to the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park. You can climb Montardo, visit Restanca and the beautiful Lac de Mar, try climbing on the Eth Taro d’Arties via ferrata, or take a bike to Enduro Mies, a mountain bike enduro zone with sections of varying difficulty.

Arties offers countless activities. It is a lively village that will captivate you instantly. Architecturally, it is also stunning. In the old town, you’ll find the Parish Church of Santa Maria from the 12th century, showcasing a blend of different styles, from its oldest Romanesque nave to its splendid Gothic five-story tower with a large clock. Inside, you’ll see several Baroque altarpieces from the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as Renaissance houses, among the most remarkable in the Val d’Aran, such as Lo Paulet from 1549 with notable windows, and Casa Portolà, which preserves a 16th-century square tower.
On the other side of the main road stands the Church of San Juan de Arties, a Gothic building from the late 13th and early 14th centuries with an octagonal bell tower. It now serves as a museum facility, hosting traveling exhibitions throughout the year. In the southern part of the village, you’ll find the Chapel of San Pelegrín.
IN SUMMER
In Arties, the tradition of burning a fir tree on the longest night of the year, the summer solstice eve, is preserved. Known as “Era Crèma deth Taro”, the Taro is lit and dragged through the streets of Arties accompanied by music and people. Tradition holds that the ashes of Eth Taro protect, purify, and fertilize, spreading them around the village to ward off evil spirits. This celebration has been declared a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.
